Paying for College

July 31, 2008 By: len Category: Timberlane 1 Comment →

When I contacted Mr. La Salle about the kids watching The Apprentice in economics class, I offered a few suggestions about better ways to spend the time.  One of my suggestions was to educate kids on financing their post secondary education.  Am I the only one who thinks this would be a worthwhile effort?

I guess we’re on our own.  For those with kids going to college, how are you paying for it?  Where are you getting (or looking for) scholarships?  Where are you borrowing money?  Student aid?  Are you finding hidden costs?

I’d like to assemble a FAQ with links.

Everyday Errors

Children learn what they live.  It drives me nuts when I see that a teacher has miscalculated a grade on a math test or misspelled a word on a spelling list.  It’s not just the error — it’s the carelessness on the part of the professional.  One day, going over my youngest son’s papers, I came across a rhyming exercise.  There was a big ‘x’ beside a word he rhymed with sing and a note that said “ping is not a word.”  Of course, ping is a word.  I printed out the page of the dictionary that included all its meanings and sent it back to the teacher asking her to tell him she had made a mistake and to be more careful in the future.

The solution to this problem is to consult a dictionary before correcting spelling or word use — that’s what I do and that’s what I have my kids do.

What errors do you encounter in your dealings with professionals, how do you know that it is an error, and what tip or trick can you share so that the rest of us make less fewer errors?

Anyone Seen My Wallet?

Just finished watching the 5/8 school board meeting.  Do they ever talk about teaching kids at School Board meetings?  Representatives George Winchell (Atkinson) and Kenneth Weyler (Kingston) discuss teacher pensions and state aid to schools.  Both (the programs not the representatives) are going to cost us dearly.  The worst school in the SAU is excused from completing the legally required 180 days while the middle and high school are deemed to be ‘in need of improvement’ by the state.  Foot-in-the-door warrants eat away at the operating budget as kindergarten tax impact is felt in the first year and $144,444 proves insufficient to upgrade the Special Ed Space.   Mr. La Salle offers no explanation and no action as members of the School Board express concern that SAU is moving forward with BS implementation without their approval.
