Are you smarter than a selectman?

February 28, 2009 By: len Category: Board of Selectmen No Comments →

Selectman Moore moved and Selectman Giordano seconded a motion to purchase 3600 gallons of #2 fuel oil from Irving at the proposed contract rate of $3.533 per gallon. The motion passed unanimously.

When the BOS expanded to five, we were promised diversity of thought.  It’s rare that a BOS motion is not passed unanimously.  The heating oil contract was approved unanimously.  Now, the town is paying nearly twice as much for heating oil as the rest of us.  The Library Trustees have already told us they are not as dumb as the BOS.  Is anyone?  Who, besides the town of Danville, contracted for heating oil at $3.50 or more per gallon?

How do you pay fof heating oil?

Sandown Consolidation Doublespeak

February 28, 2009 By: len Category: Sandown Consolidation, School Board, Timberlane 4 Comments →

No one is losing a job. The savings are based solely on maintenance expenses.

TRSD Warrant Article 3 asks for a half million dollars to study consolidation of the two Sandown elementary schools.  SAU administration members and supportive school board members tout this as another ‘win/win’ for taxpayers and the schools.  They claim the consolidation will save money while improving education.

Taxpayers are skeptical — with good reason.  The SAU has a long standing tradition of exagerated claims, broken promises, and deliberate deceptions.  The Consolidation is not going to break with tradition.

On February 5th at the TRSD Deliberative Session, Mr. La Salle said cost savings would include elimination of redundant staff.  Later in the meeting, he cited salary among savings.  Less than two weeks later, the Eagle Tribune is reporting that no jobs will be lost to the consolidation.

Note: Speaking of deliberate deceptions, part of the justification of this new construction is that our ‘No Tax Impact’ kindergarten program is housed in inadequate  rooms.

Is Danville Recession Proof?

February 22, 2009 By: len Category: Community No Comments →

The feds, the state, and towns all around us are cutting budgets and payrolls.   Businesses are laying off and closing down.  My employer is letting 10% go.  How is our bedroom community doing?  Just fine thanks.  After a budget busting 15% increase in spending last year, we are moving forward with no cut backs and 3.5% raises for all! Danville BOS Meeting 02/09/09

February 22, 2009 By: len Category: Board of Selectmen, Community No Comments →

As discussed during the Deliberative Session on February 7th, the operating budget has been increased by $16,222: $15,000 for winter maintenance, $1,047 for a grant received by the Fire Department and $175 for the renewal of the voting machine maintenance contract. It was agreed by the board that these costs need to be included in the default budget. Selectman Moore moved and Selectman Pouliot seconded a motion to increase the default budget from $2,418,792 to $2,435,014.  The motion passed unanimously.

Two tax exemptions  as approved by Rod Wood were signed by the Board.

Selectman Luna informed the Board members that he has received phone calls about other towns putting together a “wish list” for the potential stimulus package projects.  There was a short discussion about different projects around the state, including the Manchester airport and the I93 expansion.  Selectman Pouliot mentioned that finishing Sandown Road could be a good item to include on the list
